Overview

Rashtrapati Bhavan the official residence of the Indian President, originally designed as the Viceroy’s residence, stands as an architectural marvel envisioned by Edwin Lutyens. Built between 1914 and 1927, it is the largest residential complex for a head of state globally. The structure, a blend of Western and Indian architectural elements, reflects Lutyens’ adaptation to Lord Hardinge’s insistence on incorporating Indian designs. Notable features include the red and buff sandstone construction, a monumental dome inspired by the Pantheon, and opulent halls like the Durbar Hall and Ashoka Hall. The Mughal Gardens, designed by Lutyens, add to its grandeur.  It became Government House on August 15, 1947, and later, Rashtrapati Bhavan during President Dr. Rajendra Prasad’s term. The architectural marvel boasts 340 rooms, 2.5 kilometers of corridors, and a vast 190 acres of gardens. Since independence, Rashtrapati Bhavan has served as the venue for significant events, including defense investiture ceremonies, leader inaugurations, and celebrations of India’s Independence and Republic Day. It stands as a witness to historic speeches, diplomatic agreements, and the honoring of national heroes and achievers. Rashtrapati Bhavan is also open for visitors with prior appointments..
